Biden approves $100 million in emergency money to resettle Afghan refugees US President Joe Biden has approved up to $100 million from an emergency fund to cover “urgent unexpected” refugee needs in Afghanistan, including special immigration visas, according to announced the White House for Afghan applicants. 

Biden also approved on Friday the publication of $200 million worth of services and goods from US government inventors to meet the same needs, the White House said.

 The first group of evacuees and their families are expected to fly to Fort Lee, a US military base in Virginia, before the end of the month, where they will wait for their visa applications to be finalized. 

Some 2,500 Afghans could be taken to the facility, about 48 km south of Richmond, the Pentagon announced Monday. The Biden administration is reviewing other U.S. institutions in the US. Department of America and abroad that could accommodate SIV applicants and their families. Special immigration visas are available to Afghans who worked as translators or other jobs for the US government after the US-led invasion in 2001. On Thursday, the U.S. 

House of Representatives passed a law that would increase the number of IMS that could be granted by 8,000, covering all potentially eligible applications in progress. According to US officials, nearly 18,000 such applications are being processed.
